I have always wanted to visit Mekong Delta in the Southern region of Vietnam since I was young. I have finally did in 2015 during my route to Phnom Penh. Although, I didn’t spend much time there. It was like a first introduction to the different cities. It was much bigger than I though it was going to be. It took hours on buses to get from one city to another, but it was quite an educational. I went back to Mekong Delta again in 2016, and this trip, I have spent a lot more time in many of the cities which I have visited before. I learned a lot, and have made many friends along the way.
I walked around pretty much all day to different places. Mainly, where people live and where they would hang out. I would be drinking beer, coffee or tea among them with a conversation or two, and they have always welcomed me with their generosity.
The people of Mekong Delta are different than the people I have experienced in the cities of Vietnam. They are hard working people. They always greeted me with smiles, and warm welcomes.
I have made several friends, and I was able to get close up and personal to many of them. There are many histories made here in Mekong Delta, some are not so good. There was a man who took me to many important places where the different events were taken place during the War. Mekong Delta is very old, it goes back to the Khmer Empire era. The people still live as they always have for many generations. They are mostly farmers, fishermen, and merchants. Life here is very simple, and people are much more relax and they take life one day at a time. They are genuinely good hearted, polite and kind people.
Most of the merchants would work from dawn to dust. I have met many of them who live in small huts in the jungle, raising their family and doing the best they can. They have always invited me in to their homes and made me hot tea. We sat around drinking tea and making sign language. They are mostly generous people, and like to share food drinks and good time with the visitors.
I like the people here a lot in Mekong Delta. I am planning to come back and spend more time with them again soon.
